Junior Team Trip to Hamilton Gardens    WEDNESDAY 23rd NOVEMBER

FINAL NOTICE!!!
All children and helpers need to be at school by 8.30 so rolls can be completed and any last minute instructions can be given. We will leave at 9.00 and be home by 3.00.

If your child is unable to come on Wednesday please ring the office before 8.30 .             Our time constraints are tight and we don’t want to waste time ringing home to find children.

The children will need the following items for this visit:
  • ·         All children are to be dressed in correct uniform .
  • ·         They will take their school hats with them.
  • ·         Suitable shoes for walking .
  • ·         Lots of food for morning tea and lunch and a drink (or 2)  of water.
  •           Items such as yoghurt would be better left at home on this day to avoid spillage!
  • ·         Children do not require money on the day and will not be visiting the shop.
  • ·         We will take sunscreen with us but if you can apply sunscreen at home this would be very helpful. We are expecting a very warm day on Wednesday.

If your child requires medication e.g. asthma inhaler, this should be given to the class teacher. The children will not be taking their bags with them as we walk so we cannot find their medication if needed if it is hiding in a school bag.  The teachers will have first aid kits if required.

If you have any questions please talk to your child’s teacher and we will be happy to help.

Week 5 Term 4 2016

This week we started to talk about what our sunflowers might look like when they have grown.
We looked at some photographs and we had to draw what we could see,not just what we thought. This was REALLY hard!

Next Mrs Finucane asked us to draw a really big sunflower head and use the correct colours... Some of us had several attempts but we didn't give up!

Here are our sunflower observational drawings...

Week 4 Term 4 2016

Week 4 Term 4 2016

We have had sunflowers growing in our room for 3 weeks now. We have had some grow weel, some are just sprouting and some,,,well nothing at all!

Today we re-potted them because our seedlings need more good soil to grow in.
We are hoping to have our sunflowers ready for Christmas although they have a lot of growing to do yet!

Week 3 Term 4 2016

Over the past 2 weeks we have been talking about seeds and how they grow.
We found out that seeds have coats and contain a small plant and all the food that the plant needs to grow.
We did a small inquiry about what seeds need to have to grow well and we predicted the outcomes. After 1 week we looked back at our seedlings and found we had made good predictions.

Seeds need water, warmth, light, soil, air and even noise and company so they will germinate. If they do not have some of these things they won't grow as fast or as strong , and sometimes not grow at all...

As part of our inquiry into seeds we looked at different foods that have seeds.
We had to look at a cross section and try and draw it accurately and with the correct
colours and sizes. This was tricky but we did our best .
Now these sketches are on the wall of our classroom. Can you tell what foods we drew?

On Friday Stanley Avenue School hosted a combined schools calf club.

Week 2 Term 4 2016

We were very lucky to have Kathy from Zero Waste  visiting on Monday. She was coming in to see Miss Williams and Room 5 to help them get our school worm farm started, and she was able to visit the other junior classes as well.

Kathy brought some tiger worms in to show us and talked about what they need to eat in the worm farm. Anything that comes from plants is okay, including scraps, ash, sawdust and even cardboard and paper!

Week 1 Term 4 2016

Welcome back!

This term we are working on a theme called "Lets get growing!"

We have planted sunflower seeds and we are working on an inquiry about what they need to grow. We have them in different places to test if they need light, warmth, quiet, air, and soil.
We also have planted some extra seeds to see if we can grow some sunflowers to take home at the end of the year.

We also had a lot of New World seeds given to us . We are not having a competition like Room 5 and 6, but any of the seeds we can get growing we will put in the school gardens.

We had to measure, and mix and put the seeds in and now we are keeping them moist so they can grow. We are wondering how long it will take before we see them sprouting...

Week 9 Term 3 2016

This week was our final week at school for the term. We had our performance assembly and the Junior team did something a bit different...

Kathy made us a beautiful moa to help support our story, and we found out a little bit about moas as we went.

Week 6 Term 3 2016

This week we have been really luck and have had Harold, Mike and the Life Education Caravan at school.
We have been looking at the theme "It's okay to be different" and have had 2 sessions in the caravan.

We were able to go to assembly this week and show our "people" to the rest of the school. We have learned that while there are lots of things that are similar about each other. We are  UNIQUE  and Different and Special...
and that's okay!
My Personality!
What I look like is only one part of me.
What I say, how I feel, and how I act everyday
is much more important to me.

My individuality.....my originality....my speciality...

It’s my Personality!

Miss  Williams took photos of us all and put together this collage for us because we are special!

In Room 7 we think that your personality is about...

*   the way you think
*  The way you act
*   How you speak
*The way you use your words
   *How you feel
  *The way you do things

We are  UNIQUE  and Different and Special...
and that's okay!

Week 5 Term 3 2016

Using cross country as a theme we were learning this week how to create images that show movement.
Our first activity was to look at some photos and look at where the body parts went.
Then we got some body shapes and twisted and turned them until we showed movement .
Finally we glued them to a background and we wrote about the actions our "people" had made and why.

Our next activity was to use this idea to sketch ourselves running at cross country!
This was a challenge but we tried really hard and were able to draw some awesome pictures showing us running as well as writing some great pieces called "Two Feet".

Come in and have a closer look at our work if you can. We have been very creative with our drawing and our words.

Week 4 Term 3 2016

This week we had cross country at Boyd Park. We have had lots of rain so we haven't had a lot of time to practise, but Mrs Finucane still thinks we did really well.

On Friday we celebrated in Room 7. We keep a marble jar and we collect marbles for all the kind things we do for each other and for working as a team.

We managed to fill our jar twice in under 2 weeks so Mrs Finucane made us a special reward... Mini chocolate cakes with m and m's AND sprinkles on top!  YUM!!!!!

We wrote some awesome stories about this as well, and we have started filling our jar again!

Week 3 Term 3 2016

Mrs Hayes has been really busy outside the school and made this awesome mural about the Olympics ! We went out to have a look.
Go Kiwis Go!

On Tuesday we got the chance to meet Bruce Potter who is an illustrator.
He showed us how he comes up with the ideas for his drawings, and then how he plans and draws them.
He is very clever!
Thanks Miss Williams for the awesome pictures of us watching him.

This week we welcomes another new student to Room 7!
Luan has joined us from Australia so now we have 26 students again. Welcome Luan.
We hope you will like living in Te Aroha and coming to Stanley Avenue School.

Week 2 Term 3 2016

This week we had a black furry visitor to our class.
Reef brought his dog Ash to visit us. We all had a chance to pat her and Reef told us all about the things he needs to do to look after her.She is beautiful and was very good with all the children.
Ash is a black furry german shepherd.

Also this week we had a new student join us . Her name is Amohia and she is lovely! Welcome to our class.

Week 1 Term 3 2016

Welcome back to Term 3!

We have 2 new students in Room 7 this term called Joanna and Lukasz. We hope they have a great time in our class! We have been working on getting to know each other and getting back into routines this week.

Our room looks very empty, even though we have moved the furniture around so we hope to start making some new things to show you very soon.
Term 2 2016

Hello everyone. Mrs Finucane has just realised how long it has been since we put anything up on the Blog!

Here are some photos of some of the things we have done, and would like to celebrate!

In week 6 Mrs Spencer was in our class and she read us the legend of "Maui and the Sun". We made some spectacular pictures and then when Mrs Finucane was back we wrote about our favourite part and published our writing. Here are some examples...

We are very lucky to have Mrs Prattley working in our room and she does some really awesome things with us. Here are some examples of what we do with Mrs Prattley...

Mrs Prattley read us a story called "The Seven Kites of Matariki".

We thought it was an awesome story so when we were asked to make something for the Rec Centre display for our Matariki Hangi , Mrs Finucane thought we could try and make the kites from the story.
We all thought it was too hard but when we worked in teams and thought hard we managed to make our kites look nearly the same as the book. They are so awesome that we have had them in the Rec Centre, our foyer and in the Office foyer as well!
Mrs Finucane is going to put them in our classroom for the rest of the year because we did such a great job!

Finally... at the end of the term we had our final assembly and we awarded our class certificates to Legend, Calais and Joe. These three wonderful students, along with Hayley , are moving to Room 11 next term which is sad for us but we know they will make us proud.
